ASA settings for the Prusa MK3S+
Workable with mods
⚡ Quick answer: Print ASA on the Prusa MK3S+ at 250°C hotend, 100°C bed, 70 mm/s, 10% part-cooling fan and 0.8 mm retraction. Run a temperature tower to fine-tune your exact spool.
These are tuned starting settings for printing ASA on the Prusa MK3S+. The Prusa MK3S+ has a direct-drive extruder with an all-metal hotend, so we set the hotend to 250°C and the bed to 100°C. ASA is the UV-stable cousin of ABS, built for parts that live outdoors in sun and weather without yellowing.

⚠️ Like ABS, ASA warps and fumes — an enclosure and ventilation are required. A touch more fan than ABS keeps overhangs crisp. The open Prusa MK3S+ works for small parts, but expect warping on anything large.
Recommended ASA profile
| Hotend temperature | 250°C (tower 240–265°C) |
| Bed temperature | 100°C |
| Print speed | 70 mm/s |
| Retraction | 0.8 mm (direct drive) |
| Part cooling fan | 10% |
| Bed adhesion | ABS/ASA slurry or glue on the heated bed. |
| Nozzle | Brass 0.4 mm |
| Difficulty | Advanced |
💡 Best uses for ASA: outdoor and UV-exposed parts.
Troubleshooting ASA on the Prusa MK3S+
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Stringing or fine hairs | Dry ASA before printing, drop the hotend a few degrees below 250°C, and raise retraction toward 1.2 mm. Damp filament is the No. 1 cause of stringing. |
| Poor first-layer adhesion | ABS/ASA slurry or glue on the heated bed. Re-level the bed, set a slightly squished first layer, and wipe the sheet with IPA so it is grease-free. |
| Blobs, zits or rough walls | Slow the outer wall, enable coasting/wipe, and keep retraction near 0.8 mm. Keep the part-cooling fan low so layers bond and warping stays down. |
FAQ
- What temperature should I print ASA on the Prusa MK3S+?
- Start at 250°C for the hotend and 100°C for the bed, then run a temperature tower across 240–265°C to dial in your exact filament brand.
- What print speed works for ASA on this printer?
- Around 70 mm/s is a safe starting point on the Prusa MK3S+. It can go faster once the profile is tuned, but start conservative for clean walls.
- What retraction should I use?
- Use about 0.8 mm of retraction (direct drive needs very little). If you see stringing, raise retraction speed before distance and dry the filament.
- Do I need an enclosure for ASA on the Prusa MK3S+?
- Yes — ASA needs an enclosure to avoid warping, and the Prusa MK3S+ is open, so add one or expect warping and cracking on larger parts.
