Nearly every TPU failure comes down to two settings pushed too hard: speed and retraction. Flexible filament behaves like a spring in the extruder, so the fixes are the opposite of what you would do to speed up a PLA print.
Why speed is the master setting
When you push soft TPU through an extruder faster than the nozzle can melt it, the filament compresses and buckles instead of advancing — the classic TPU jam. The cure is simple: slow down. Start at 20 mm/s and only creep up once prints are clean. On a direct-drive machine you may reach 30–40 mm/s; on Bowden, 15–20 mm/s is often the ceiling.
Keep acceleration and jerk low too. Sudden speed changes cause the same buckling as high steady speed, so a smooth, gentle motion profile helps as much as the headline speed number.
Retraction: less is more
Retraction is where people ruin TPU prints. Pulling the soft filament back too far stretches it inside the extruder and creates jams and gaps. Use the minimum retraction that controls stringing:
- Direct drive: 0.5–1.5 mm
- Bowden: 2–4 mm (and expect more stringing regardless)
If you see stringing, dry the filament and raise travel speed before adding retraction distance. With flexibles, more retraction usually makes things worse, not better.
Direct drive vs Bowden for TPU
The extruder type is the single biggest hardware factor. A direct-drive extruder has a very short path from gears to nozzle, so there is little room for the filament to compress — TPU feeds reliably and can even print at moderate speed. A Bowden setup pushes filament through a long tube, which flexible filament fills like a spring, so retraction becomes imprecise and speeds must stay low. You can absolutely print TPU on Bowden; just expect to go slow and accept a little more stringing.
