Which 3D printing filament should you use?

Answer one question — what does the part need to do? — and get a clear filament recommendation, with a backup option and the reason why.

There is no single "best" filament — only the best one for your part. Find the row that matches your goal below, then follow the link for full settings tuned to your printer.

Pick by what the part needs to do

If I’m a beginner or just want it to print easily
Use PLAPLA is the most forgiving filament: low temperature, no enclosure, sticks to almost anything.
If The part must survive heat, sun or a hot car
Use PETG or ASAPETG handles ~70–80°C and weather; for full sun and UV, step up to ASA.
If I need a strong, functional mechanical part
Use PETG or ABSPETG is tough and easy; ABS adds heat resistance if you have an enclosure.
If The part needs to bend, grip or absorb shock
Use TPUTPU is rubber-like and flexible — ideal for gaskets, grips, phone cases and wheels.
If It lives outdoors in direct sunlight
Use ASAASA resists UV so it keeps its colour and strength where ABS would yellow and crack.
If I need maximum strength and heat resistance
Use Polycarbonate or Nylon (PA)Polycarbonate is one of the strongest, most heat-resistant filaments; nylon wins for wear and living hinges.
If I want tougher prints than PLA but the same easy printing
Use PLA+PLA+ prints almost exactly like PLA but is less brittle and more impact-resistant.
If I want a premium look (metallic sheen or wood)
Use Silk PLA or Wood PLASilk PLA gives a glossy metallic finish; wood PLA looks and sands like real wood.
If I need stiff, lightweight parts (drones, jigs)
Use PLA-CF or PETG-CFCarbon-fibre filaments are rigid and matte — fit a hardened nozzle for them.
If I need dissolvable or break-away supports
Use PVA or HIPSPVA dissolves in water (pairs with PLA); HIPS dissolves in limonene (pairs with ABS).
