Symptom: The first layer has gaps, ripples, or a squished spreading base.
Most likely causes
- Z offset too high or too low
- Bed not level / not trammed
- First layer too fast
- Bed temperature too high (elephant foot)
Test in this order
- Run a first-layer calibration square and adjust Z live.
- Auto-level or manually tram the bed, then re-check corners.
- Slow the first layer and confirm consistent line width.
- Lower bed temp a few degrees or add a small chamfer to fight elephant foot.
Stop changing multiple settings at once. Note the model, filament condition and room conditions, then change one variable and compare the same test print.
