PETG is unusual: the problem is rarely that it will not stick — it is that it sticks so hard it can tear chunks out of a PEI sheet or glass bed. The goal with PETG is controlled adhesion: enough to hold the first layer, little enough to release cleanly.
Why PETG sticks too well
Hot PETG forms a genuine chemical bond with PEI and glass. That is great for keeping a print planted mid-job, but when the part cools it can grip so hard that removing it pulls a flake of PEI or a sliver of glass with it. People come to PETG expecting adhesion trouble and instead damage their plates.
The mental shift is this: with PETG you are not trying to make it stick more, you are trying to make it release cleanly while still holding the first layer down.
Glue stick as a release agent (not for grip)
This is the opposite of how glue stick is used with PLA. A thin layer of PVA glue stick on the plate acts as a barrier between the PETG and the PEI/glass, so the part lets go without tearing the surface. It is protecting the bed, not improving grip.
Other good options are a textured PEI sheet (PETG releases from it much more willingly than from smooth PEI) or a dedicated PETG-friendly build surface. Whatever you use, let the bed cool before removing the part — warm PETG is when the bond is strongest.
First-layer settings and corner lift
For a clean, releasable first layer:
- Z-offset slightly higher than PLA — squishing PETG hard makes it over-adhere and leaves a rough base.
- Bed 70–85°C — hot enough to prevent lift, not so hot it turns gummy (see PETG temperature).
- Slow first layer (15–25 mm/s) for consistent line width.
- Brim for tall or small-footprint parts to fight corner lift.
If corners still lift, the bed is too cool or there is a draft; if the part welds itself to the plate, the bed is too hot or you are missing the release layer.
