PETG has a wider usable temperature window than PLA, which is both good and bad: good because it is forgiving, bad because “it prints” across a big range while only a narrow band gives strong, clean layers. Here is how to find that band.
The PETG temperature range
PETG prints across roughly 230–250°C. Within that window, cooler settings give cleaner detail and less stringing, while hotter settings give stronger layer bonding but more ooze. The best temperature is the lowest one that still gives solid layer adhesion — that combination is what you are hunting for.
Brands vary more than you might expect. A value PETG might need 245–250°C to bond well, while a premium spool prints clean at 235°C. High-speed printers (Bambu, K1) also push the temperature up because filament spends less time in the melt zone.
How to run a PETG temperature tower
A temperature tower is the fastest way to find your exact number:
- Download a temperature-tower model with distinct segments.
- Set it to change hotend temperature every segment — for PETG, start at 250°C at the bottom and step down to 230°C at the top (or use our temperature tower planner to build the height–temperature table).
- After printing, look for the segment with the strongest layer bonding, cleanest bridges and least stringing.
- Use that temperature as your baseline, then fine-tune retraction.
PETG bed temperature
Set the bed to 70–85°C. Too cool and corners lift; too hot and the first layer turns gummy and over-adheres, which is its own problem with PETG.
