ABS and ASA are safe materials to own and handle, but melting them releases styrene gas and ultrafine particles (UFPs). This isn’t a reason to avoid them — it’s a reason to set up ventilation, the same way you would for soldering or spray paint.
What ABS and ASA actually emit
When heated to printing temperature, ABS and ASA give off styrene (which has a distinctive sharp smell) and large numbers of ultrafine particles small enough to reach deep into the lungs. Emissions are highest at higher nozzle temperatures. PLA emits far less, which is part of why it’s recommended for beginners and classrooms.
How to ventilate safely
The goal is to contain the fumes and move them away from where people breathe:
- Enclose the printer — this both improves print quality and contains emissions.
- Vent outdoors where possible: a duct from the enclosure to a window is the most effective option.
- Carbon + HEPA filtration helps with smell and particles if outdoor venting isn’t possible, but is less complete than direct venting.
- Don’t print in a bedroom or occupied small room. A garage, workshop or dedicated room is far better.
Sensible habits
Run ABS/ASA prints when the space can be ventilated, avoid lingering next to an actively printing open machine, and let the enclosure clear before opening it fully. None of this makes ABS exotic — it just means treating it like any other material that produces fumes when it melts. If you can’t ventilate, PETG is a strong, low-odour alternative for many jobs.
