PLA is the filament almost everyone starts with, and for good reason: it prints cool, needs no enclosure, barely smells and sticks to almost any bed. This guide covers the handful of things worth knowing to get consistently clean PLA prints — and the one real limitation (heat) you can’t tune away.
PLA at a glance
PLA (polylactic acid) is a plant-derived thermoplastic that melts at a low temperature and cools quickly, which is exactly why it is so forgiving. It is rigid and detailed but has low heat resistance and is fairly brittle compared with PETG or ABS.
- Hotend: 190–220°C (start at 205°C)
- Bed: 55–60°C (or cold on a good textured sheet)
- Speed: 50–60 mm/s standard; high-speed printers go far faster
- Cooling: 100% part fan after the first layers
- Enclosure: not needed — in fact an enclosure can make PLA soften
- Nozzle: brass is fine unless it’s a filled PLA (wood, carbon, glow)
What PLA is good (and bad) at
PLA is ideal for prototypes, toys, figurines, cosplay and anything decorative. Its weakness is heat: a PLA part starts to soften around 55–60°C, so it will droop in a hot car, a sunny window or near a heat source. No temperature setting fixes that — if a part needs heat resistance, switch to PETG or ABS.
PLA is also more brittle than PLA+ or PETG. For functional parts that take stress, PLA+ is a tougher drop-in upgrade that prints almost identically.
The common PLA issues
- Stringing. Less common than with PETG, but it happens — usually from too much heat or a damp spool. See how to stop PLA stringing.
